Entertainment Options for Dayton Students, Part 2
Still looking for something fun to do on the weekends, but not sure what’s off campus? This is the second post in our series on things to do in the greater Dayton area.
National Museum of the Air Force
Boasting more than 360 aerospace vehicles and missiles on display, the National Museum of the Air Force is a favorite for tourists, visiting Dayton. Admission is free unless you decide to visit a show at their IMAX theatre. (Check your local college classifieds for any available IMAX tickets.) Wright-Patterson Air Force Base is right around the corner too, so keep your eyes open for planes taking off and landing.
Dayton Art Institute
Chances are, one of your general education classes will require you to visit the Dayton Art Institute in downtown Dayton. The Institute was founded in 1919 and has exhibits covering the past 5,000 years. In addition to historical art displays, the Institute also features special events that can be focused on everything from urban art to simply a movie night. Admission is free for students, but make sure it’s open when you plan on going; Mondays and Tuesdays are usually closed.
Oregon District
If you’re looking for a chill place to go visit with friends, or for a laid-back date, the Oregon District is the place to go. You can choose to merely walk around and see historic homes, or you can visit the Oregon Arts District for an “eclectic brew of artistic, educational, and cultural options.” There are also a lot of great local pubs and restaurants offering tasty food options and special craft beers. The Oregon District is a fun place to hang on the weekends and generally attracts a younger, hip crowd.
These are just a couple of the many entertainment options around the Dayton area. If you are new to the area, have fun exploring and trying new things. Also, be sure to check our first post in this series to get more fun and cheap entertainment ideas.
Entertainment Options for Wright State Students, Part 1
Are you a new college student to Dayton looking for something fun to do without spending a fortune? Oftentimes, finding good date ideas or friend ideas, can be a challenge. However, as any well-connected student in Dayton will tell you that there is no shortage of fun things to do in the area. From great local eateries to incredible concerts, Dayton offers some fine entertainment options. The trick however for freshmen at neighboring schools like Wright State University, is finding some of these hidden gems that are often off the beaten path. This post will be the first of a series of blog posts that will highlight some of the entertainment options for local students.
Kings Island - “The Largest Amusement & Waterpark in the Midwest”
Located just 50 minutes from Dayton, Ohio, Kings Island is a very popular destination for everyone from families to college students. Tickets aren’t the cheapest, but there are plenty of opportunities at discount tickets. What is great is that a ticket for the amusement park also covers the water park, so you can ride roller coasters and then water slides.
Fifth Third Field - Go Dayton Dragons!
Built in the heart of Dayton, Fifth Third Field is home to the Dayton Dragons minor league baseball team. Tickets are very affordable for college students and provide several hours of entertainment.
Nutter Center - At Wright State University!
Known to every Wright State student, the Nutter Center hardly needs a spot on this blog. Concerts, graduations, you name it, it happens here. Ticket prices will vary; be sure to check if there are any local listings on the Wright State University Classifieds. Also, look here for the schedule of events.
Second Street Market - Indoor Farmer’s Market
The second street market is a big hit for locals. This year round farmer’s market has local fruits and vegetables, fresh flowers, local vendors, live music, coffee, ethnic foods and wonderful breakfasts. It is a sure winner for a date idea or even just a fun place to go to on a Saturday morning with your friends and peers.
These are a few of the many opportunities that help make Dayton a great place to live or visit. In the coming weeks, we will be adding more attractions, first date ideas and favorite local restaurants. Stay tuned and follow us on Twitter!
Make money on Postify
Tired of being another poor college student without enough money to even go see a movie? Try posting some of your old items on Postify!
We’ve made it easy for local college students to interact with each other by seeing items for sale on their own college campus. This makes it quick and easy to sell your used textbooks and old futon. Chances are, there’s a guy in the next dorm who really wants your old TV, so why keep it stuffed in storage?
Heck, do you take really good notes in class and still have them from last semester? Most people don’t. So post your notes for sale and help this semester’s students.
Post your used textbooks on Postify and make more money than just selling them back to the bookstore at the end of the semester.
Creative Ideas to Make Money with Postify
“Ok, you’ve convinced me… Postify is a great way to sell my used textbooks and even my roommate’s old TV, but can I actually make some money on here?”
My friend, where have you been?? I’ve been waiting for someone to ask me this question! Here are some ideas for you to make money on Postify.
1. Textbook arbitrage! Don’t let the big word scare you; it means to find something cheaper in one place, and resell it for more in another. Buy it on Postify, sell it on Amazon.
Do some research on Amazon for the textbooks floating around your campus. Sometimes a particular textbook is very popular on one campus, but there aren’t a lot on the market outside. For example, one time a friend and I noticed our bookstore had tons of a certain textbook for $10, but on Amazon it was going for about $30! We bought a number of them and resold them for an easy $20 profit on each.
2. Talk to graduating seniors and buy their textbooks!
Most seniors won’t be in the area to sell their textbooks next semester, and don’t want to bring them home. Offer them a price better than what the bookstore will, but less than what you’ll get next semester. Who knows, some might even give you their textbooks for free. Once you’ve organized your book inventory, start posting them on Postify.
3) Buy up a bunch of the used textbooks for a particular class and list them on Postify!
The bookstore won’t have many used versions, and once those are gone students will be banging down your door. No one wants to be the sucker who paid full-price for a new version.
Some of these techniques take more skill than others, but practice makes perfect. If you have any additional ideas for how to make money with Postify, let us know!
Benefits of Having a Local College Classifieds
College years are some of the most exciting times, filled with new opportunities and experiences. However, these times can also be a very stressful time for many students as finances are tight and the future is unknown. With continually rising education costs, saving money is a priority for most students.
One of the best ways that students can save money is through a local college classifieds system. Unfortunately, most colleges do not have a classifieds system for their students, so that is why we started Postify.
Here are just a few of the many benefits:
- Save money on used textbooks - One of the biggest areas that you can save money is through buying used textbooks as opposed to buying them new in the bookstore.
- Earn money selling or renting textbooks - Not only can you save money, you can actually earn cash by selling or renting your textbooks. Instead of letting your old Psychology textbook collect dust under your bed, why not sell or rent it to another college student?
- Find housing or a roommate - If you are not living on campus, it can be a challenge to find affordable housing or roommates, so having a local secure classifieds system is invaluable.
- Furnish your apartment - Once you have your apartment, save money by getting your furniture used. Who needs to go to IKEA when you have Postify? :)
- Find a job - Whether you want are a Biology tutor, or you’re looking to give guitar lessons, connect with other students on your local college classifieds system.
These are just a few of the many ways you can save money for college by using Postify. We are counting down the days until our official launch, which is when you will be able to start posting!

By jvanderwalMost Expensive College Textbooks
How much do you spend on college textbooks each year? I found a receipt the other day from one of my engineering semesters for almost $500! I thought it was just because I was an engineering student, but it turns out the average amount a student spends a year on textbooks is between $700 - $1000.
The top most expensive individual textbooks according to a 2010 CBS new article were:
- Acta Philosophorum The First Journal of Philosophy: $1,450
- Encyclopedia of International Media and Communications: $1,215
- Management Science An Anthology: $850
- History of Early Film: $740
- Biostatistical Genetics and Genetic Epidemiology: $665
If you find yourself in a class that requires one of these extremely expensive textbooks, you’re probably better off trying to rent a textbook, or dropping the class entirely,
Or…
You could try your local college classifieds website to see if any other unlucky students had to buy the book last semester, and are now looking to sell. I was able to cut my semester book bill down to about $100 by finding upperclassmen who didn’t need the book anymore.
Another way that you can potentially save a lot of money on your college textbooks is by using an older edition. When doing this, just make sure your professor allows older textbooks.
Saving money in college is essential, so do you yourself a favor and only buy a new textbook if you’ve exhausted all other options to buy a used textbook.
